India Ritchie
At Home

The Muse at 269 Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by the British artist India Ritchie. Having exhibited in group shows in the UK, USA and Pakistan, Ritchie presents a collection of old and new work at Muse, consisting of printmaking, painting and photography.

Ritchie’s work investigates the overlapping of private and public space in the home and the effect, both emotional and behavioural, of habitation on the inhabitant.

Installation piece Behaviour Patterns, 2009 and the accompanying series of prints entitled Interior I and Interior II, 2009, focus specifically on the presence of public space in the home, and the trend in interior design for the idealistic representation of domestic living, achieved through the ordering of objects and ritualistic cleaning.

This ordering of objects in the home is apparent in Ritchie’s latest series of prints entitled Period Living, 2010. These new prints incorporate domestic compositions reminiscent of those found in museums; the television set placed at the heart of the space. These scenes appear to not only examine the role of television in the home, but also seem to question the validity of period representations of domestic interiors.

The general absence of figures in Ritchie’s work gives the viewer a sense that she examines the prevalent themes in her work objectively. However, from discussion with the artist, it becomes apparent that many of the elements in her work are a deliberate, if somewhat secretive, reference to her own experience of home life. This playful interweaving of memory with an extensive body of theoretical research is characteristic of Ritchie’s work.

Previous group shows include New Prints/Autumn’09 at IPCNY, New York; Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious at The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Philadelphia; Spinning Tongues at Vibe Bar Gallery, London; This Is England at The Spiral Staircase, Lancashire then traveling to Lahore, Pakistan; Presenting The Top 100 at Jealous Gallery, London, London Group Open at Menier Gallery, London; The 7th Annual British Mini Print Exhibition at The London Print Studio, London and 11 other UK venues.
