Muse at 269 is delighted to present Divers, a body of work created from images of spring-board divers in freefall. The series of paintings, drawings and etchings negotiates between formal paradigms, combining abstraction with mimetic representation, and denying the figure either a context or a void. Through the ambivalence of falling, the series occupies a space between optimism and pessimism. Divers are also rich in formal resonances, from images of crucifixion to Barnett Newman’s zips.

Alexander Massouras is a painter and printmaker. He currently holds a Leverhulme scholarship at Tate, where he is part of “Art School Educated,” a project investigating the post-war histories of London’s art schools. He has exhibited his work with galleries in the UK and the US, including: 7Eleven Gallery, New York; American Standard Gallery, Miami; and the Royal Academy, London. A selection of his work was also shown at the 2009 Northern Print Biennale at the Laing Museum in Newcastle. He was shortlisted for the 2010 Gilchrist Fisher award. Divers is his first solo show.
