drawings by rosie leventon

Best known for her large installations that have been made for museums, sculpture parks and galleries in many countries, Rosie Leventon is now showing her drawings for the first time in London.

“ Leventon’s drawings combine expressive energy with a sculptor’s instinct for ground and depth. Surfaces are tactile, often evoking organic sculptural materials, or referencing the elemental aspects of landscape. Some of the drawings also contain Middle Eastern hand writing and calligraphy” Tom Flynn

Her work has recently been bought by the Henry Moore Institute, and recent shows include: The Workshop of Hereafter, Blyth Gallery, Imperial College,

Unfold, Nettie Horn Gallery, Concrete & Glass, Shoreditch Town Hall, Prospects & Interiors, Henry Moore Institute, Leeds.

PREVIEW: Richard Taylor, A Solo Show by Artist-in-residence, Tues 20th July, 6-9pm

The Muse at 269 is pleased to present the Aritst-in-residence Exhibition, A body of work created over the last 7 months by British artist Richard Taylor.

Richard Taylor’s work brings a fresh contemporary twist to an otherwise traditional process of landscape painting. The first departure comes with an initial gestural approach to mark-making, which, through a considered eye, captures the immediacy and urgency of a glance across the hustle and bustle of Portobello’s busy market place. These visual and auditory experiences find their way onto the canvas and make themselves known through splashes of vibrancy and a lyrical, ‘synaestheisiastic’ handling of paint, which results in a finished painting that brings together a myriad of experiences into one, captivating, semi-abstract space.

Richard Taylor’s 7 month residency has been a mixture of great pleasure and intense development. Having a studio on London's famous Portobello Road, free from financial burden has enabled Richard to fully concentrate on his work. With these added benefits he has been free to explore why he has chosen to be an artist. After graduating, Fine art students often find themselves in a strange halfway house; suddenly coming from a comfortable, friendly environment of the campus, to the lonely, sometimes faithless world of being an artist is a hard transition to make. The residency at the Muse 269 has helped soften that blow and given Richard the opportunity to become a better, more understanding artist.

THE SUMMER GROUP SHOW

The Summer Group Show at the Muse features a selection of past artists who have shown at the gallery over the last seven years.

There is no theme as such, but each piece must measure 52cm square. The intention behind this, is to allow each artist to fully express their individuality. The format of the square captures the essence of uniformity in the space without compromising the artists chosen subject.

The Muse is proud to exhibit such a diversity of talented emerging artists. If you have become acquainted with these artists through past shows, you will be able to witness their development in their current work. For those who are unfamiliar with these artists, it will be a good opportunity to discover their talents.

…………”you don’t have to go far away from the crowd, the party or your friends to find a quiet and beautiful place. You can lie on your back in a park or garden and just look up to see the beauty of the sky; sit on a bench and throw back your head to look up through the branches of a tree; sit on your window sill and watch the clouds drift across the moon.
Every one of these pictures I saw when I left the crowd, the gang of friends, the party just for a short while and stood alone very still and looked. And there they were. I just took the photograph”

KATKIN PRINGLE

By Nature’ refers not to the subject matter of the works, but to the manner in which they are made. The encouragement of chance means the results are undetermined; the paint inevitably acquires independence and travels by the course of nature. As gravity pulls the fluids across the surface, evaporation, chemical reactions, temperature, paint viscosity, volume and order of play, unite to form a composition that is reminiscent of the natural world and it’s landscapes – a nebula, a volcanic explosion, a crashing wave…The energy of the process, causality and the diverse results, suggest themes of flux, endlessness and organic decay.

"I like thinking with materials; you move, it moves, towards a destination you haven't envisaged. The most rewarding thing is to come to a brand new form - what the Greeks call 'poesis' you get to a point where no one has been before."

(Quote by the sculptor Tony Cragg that amounts Katkin’s thoughts)

Katkin’s interests lie in the disposition of causality, the effect that possibilities can have on human experience, and the limits and potential of human knowledge. This show, ‘By Nature’ illustrates a combination of physical presence with abstract language; a mystical world in which one searches for recognition.

PREVIEW: At Home by India Ritchie, Tues 27th April 2010, 6-9pm

India Ritchie
At Home

The Muse at 269 Gallery is pleased to present the first solo exhibition by the British artist India Ritchie. Having exhibited in group shows in the UK, USA and Pakistan, Ritchie presents a collection of old and new work at Muse, consisting of printmaking, painting and photography.

Ritchie’s work investigates the overlapping of private and public space in the home and the effect, both emotional and behavioural, of habitation on the inhabitant.

Installation piece Behaviour Patterns, 2009 and the accompanying series of prints entitled Interior I and Interior II, 2009, focus specifically on the presence of public space in the home, and the trend in interior design for the idealistic representation of domestic living, achieved through the ordering of objects and ritualistic cleaning.

This ordering of objects in the home is apparent in Ritchie’s latest series of prints entitled Period Living, 2010. These new prints incorporate domestic compositions reminiscent of those found in museums; the television set placed at the heart of the space. These scenes appear to not only examine the role of television in the home, but also seem to question the validity of period representations of domestic interiors.

The general absence of figures in Ritchie’s work gives the viewer a sense that she examines the prevalent themes in her work objectively. However, from discussion with the artist, it becomes apparent that many of the elements in her work are a deliberate, if somewhat secretive, reference to her own experience of home life. This playful interweaving of memory with an extensive body of theoretical research is characteristic of Ritchie’s work.

Previous group shows include New Prints/Autumn’09 at IPCNY, New York; Philagrafika 2010: The Graphic Unconscious at The Leonard Pearlstein Gallery, Philadelphia; Spinning Tongues at Vibe Bar Gallery, London; This Is England at The Spiral Staircase, Lancashire then traveling to Lahore, Pakistan; Presenting The Top 100 at Jealous Gallery, London, London Group Open at Menier Gallery, London; The 7th Annual British Mini Print Exhibition at The London Print Studio, London and 11 other UK venues.
