KATKIN PRINGLE

By Nature’ refers not to the subject matter of the works, but to the manner in which they are made. The encouragement of chance means the results are undetermined; the paint inevitably acquires independence and travels by the course of nature. As gravity pulls the fluids across the surface, evaporation, chemical reactions, temperature, paint viscosity, volume and order of play, unite to form a composition that is reminiscent of the natural world and it’s landscapes – a nebula, a volcanic explosion, a crashing wave…The energy of the process, causality and the diverse results, suggest themes of flux, endlessness and organic decay.

"I like thinking with materials; you move, it moves, towards a destination you haven't envisaged. The most rewarding thing is to come to a brand new form - what the Greeks call 'poesis' you get to a point where no one has been before."

Katkin’s interests lie in the disposition of causality, the effect that possibilities can have on human experience, and the limits and potential of human knowledge. This show, ‘By Nature’ illustrates a combination of physical presence with abstract language; a mystical world in which one searches for recognition.
